Data mining is a term that refers to searching a large data set in an attempt to detect hidden or low-level patterns. In effect, you are "digging around" until you find something useful. You do not look for obvious things but instead look for more subtle, more pervasive things that are not primary characteristics. You are looking for correlations that don't crop up right away - until you find the correlation and work backwards to figure out why that correlation exists.

For instance, there is a non-trivial correlation between kids who played musical instruments in school and those kids, now grown up, making better programmers. A long-term census-based personnel database with childhood historical data in it would find such correlations. It would then be up to the statisticians and the sociologists to figure out why this is so.

Answ: Because programming has many conceptual similarities to written sheet music. Kids who took music learned to follow "programs" in a variant notational scheme. They are, in effect, already indoctrinated into the concept of writing an action program.

Data mining is the principle of sorting through large amounts of data and picking out relevant information. It is usually used by business intelligence organizations, and financial analysts, but it is increasingly used in the sciences to extract information from the enormous data sets generated by modern experimental and observational methods. It has been described as "the nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data"[1] and "the science of extracting useful information from large data sets or databases

When we process and analyses large chunk of data in the form of images, files, documents, folders, videos etc with the help of computer algorithms, machine learning, statistics and database management systems to get the reliable and desired results then this complete process is known as Data mining.

Well said Hugh and Doc. Yes, so it is basically the same process as gold mining...digging for gold. Here, you are digging for data and collecting information from each data.

Hope this helps. ;)
