I have a 1993 Ford explorer 4.0 4x4. My truck will not start. the start sounds like it is free wheeling. I replaced the starter and the new one dose the same thing it will not spin the engine it just sounds like it is free wheeling. I cleaned off all the posts on the starter and on the solinoid but it did no good. the ground cable is in good condition too. The ring gear on the fly wheel is in good condition I can spin the fly wheel with a screwdriver on the ring gear and it turns the engine over. the teeth on the ring gear are not stripped out. and the starter teeth are good also. I have gotten the car to start twice like this I put jumper cables on it and It started. and then I charged the battery over night and it started but only once each time it would not start again after that. The battery is holding a full charge as well (12.87 volts). I'm out of ideas. Any help is greatly apretianted Thank You!

just because the battery is holding a good voltage, does not mean that it's got the capability to discharge the proper amount of amperage.

It looks like you need a new battery - take it in for a complete* load test.

You can never consider a battery good because it reads 12.6 volts or better. The only way to tell if a battery is good is to load test it or capacitance test it.

If I recall correctly, you have a pole shoe starter and not a solenoid, but I could be wrong.

It is possible, although unlikely, that you got a bad starter. Here is what I would do. Remove the battery and the starter, take them to wherever you bought your starter, most auto parts stores can test batters and starters, have them test the starter and the battery, replace if needed.

It may be the starter solenoid (the one on the inner fender, passenger side). I have seen these fail to where they won't allow enough AMPERAGE to work the starter properly. They will click over and you'll get the 12 volts but if the AMPS ain't there, the starter doesn't have enough "kick" to roll the engine over.

Just a suggestion....

Dave and Scott are right, take the battery to an auto parts store, and have it load tested. I think you will find that it needs to be replaced.
