When and how do alligators sleep? Can alligators breath underwater?

Both alligators and crocodiles like to sleep sunning themselves in the afternoon heat.

Since alligators are cold blooded they need the heat of the sun to power their body; they aren't solar powered, but they are warmed and their metabolism accelerated due to the heat of the sun. This is also why they live in tropical and subtropical climates.

Neither species has gills; they are air breathers and like to float with their nose just above the water line. When doing this they look like a floating log and are hard to spot. They are in the perfect condition to monitor their area and are ready to spring into action if needed; to protect themselves, their mate and their territory or to ambush their prey.

Both species are great divers who can spend almost an hour underwater. They are great at holding their breath and have enough time to scout around and catch something to eat before they have to surface.

Yes. Alligators and crocodiles can sleep underwater. They have little slits on the sides of their heads that act as gills that permit them to breathe for very long periods of time underwater. They are amphibious as well as reptilian.

Crocs can go up to 30 minutes without air. They will regularly be in a docile state submerged in a depth so they can lift their nostrils out of the water for a few seconds, long enough to take a breath and then rest again. They can be seen sleeping out of the water, however they would only do this in an area where they feel safe and secure.
