is this like a tomatoe tomAtoe thing? I say peenalize and people look at me funny.

in case you're still wondering, i'm asking for correct phonological use of the word "penalize"

"Don't penalize me for........doing such and such."

and Yes, I've given this a considerable amount of thought.

well the other form is 'pehnalty' not 'peenalty'
then there's 'peenal' code not 'pehnal' code.
that's just a screwy word I think both pronounciations are correct.

I've always heard "peenalize." And yes, these days, people look at you funny if you speak standard English.

Either pronunciation is acceptable. "Peenalize" is listed first in my dictionary.

I would check the words Latin or Greek origins and pronounce it the way the original word was pronounced.

I think you could pronounce it both ways. It's like the word 'either' . Some people say 'I-th-er" some people say 'Eeee-ther
