I have a russian tortouise (ok I can't spell it!) But I use alfalfa pellets for his substrate and they get him dusty. Rather than washing him all the time I was wondering if there was a safe oil to clean up his shell with on occasion?

I would not use anything, not even tetra wax.It could coz bacteria. Also I would not put pellets in substrate.Mix substrate with sand and keep moist.
soaking your tort 3 times a week will help shell stay clean. You can also go to http://www.russiantortoise.net/forum.htm.It has all the answers you need for care

Hello... ok first of all I'm sure none of these people have actually tried it. My answer is YES! As a matter of fact I was thinking the same exact thing. I just used some olive oil on a cotton ball and it worked great. Don't buy that turtle wax, I think oil is safer. My tortoise is doing just fine. Good Luck and let me know what happens. Oh one last thing... I'm probably going to get a bunch of thumbs downs, but let me reassure you olive oil is safe to use on russian tortoises.

No, oils will actually attract dust and make it stick more. Also, the shell is a living part of the tortoise and needs to 'breathe'. Alfalfa pellets must be kept very dry as they easily grow mold when wet. Here is more info on tortoise shell health.

You can clean it good, and use a small amount of vegetable oil. It won't hurt the turtle, but it may attract dust, as another poster suggested.

No. Any oil you put on the shell may find its way into the tortoise's blood and tissue.
