I have certainly gotten way more aware of passing time now, than I did before. When I look back, I feel a lot has happened, but it went so quick. Plus, I felt that I lived very reactively at that time. Basically, I let life act on me. But now, I feel it is time to act on life.

I also sometimes feel like I don't want to count anymore. When someone asks me my age...I really want to not be able to remember or care :).

I totally wasted my twenties and half my thirties. Time really flies when you attempt to achieve nothing.

I got out of the army after fours at the age of 22. I got out to due to an injury which I could not overcome given the rigors of military life. I received my honorable discharge and thought life would be good. However, not being proactive and taking charge of my life, time just passed me by as I fell into depression after the death of my best friend. Next thing I knew, my twenties were gone and I did nothing but blame life in general for all my problems. In my thirties, I moved to a bigger city and got a better job. Finally, being proactive, I thought I was on the right track. However, I had a hard time adjusting to the "big city" (I grew up in a town of less than 1000). I soon fell into heavy debt (it was my own fault), and the deep depression returned once again. Finally, at the age of 37, after the death of my remaining grandparent, I felt I had no more ties to my home state of Wisconsin. In Oct 2006, I chose to begin life anew before it was too late. I moved to Ohio, paid off all my debts, got my credit back on track, have a wonderful supporting girlfriend, and, at the age of 38, I am now going back to school to obtain a degree in Security Management. Even though I work 10 hour days, and study for another 10, I couldn't be happier, despite the 3-4 hours of sleep each night.

If you don't want to let any part of your life pass you by, you have to be proactive or the next thing you know, you'll be on your death bed wondering where the time went and what do you have to show for it. I let nearly 15 years slip right by me but I refuse to do it anymore. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I waited so long, but it doesn't take much for me to shrug that off anymore. Now I say "I'm ONLY 38 and still have time to do something with my life." I still have a long way to go as I still haven't found a desireable job in the least (The one I'm at is dreadful to put it mildly.) Be proactive. Take charge of your life. Set goals. Be prepared to make sacrifices. Life isn't going to hand you the key to the city, you have to get off your butt and earn it...or take it if you think you can hold it.

You know the line from that Switchfoot song "Fumbling his confidence and wondering why the world has passed him by"? That's been the first half of my twenties. I haven't even gone to college yet. All of that's gonna change now.
