strains and sprain?

are they similar? i got a strain on my elbow, and its not giving me any pain at all, but my arm is getting weaker. i sprained my thumb before and it bruised up after a day. sprains heal, and so does strains?

You "sprain" a ligament, but you "strain" a muscle (or its tendons).
