In actual Denver there are plenty of low crime, green, and clean neighborhoods. If you want to live in a loft/apartment downtown neighborhood for a family the best one would probably be Riverfront Park or the Golden Triangle but they are pricey with 2 bed/2 bath usualy starting at and around $500,000. Also try Capitol Hill, Cherry Creek, University, Hiltop, and Green Valley Ranch. I also enjoy Park Hill for the diversity but many dont care for it there. As far as schools, Denver is better then most inner city schools however it is still sufering. I would reccomend private schools in the area or schools in the suburbs. Look more into it however, that was just a broad prospective of DPS.
As far as subrubs I would try the southern suburbs like Centennial, Littleton, and Highlands Ranch. They are beautiful cities with lots of good transportation into Denver (driving up from them requires going though the Denver tech center which is the third largest employment hub in the nation so traffic is horrendus there). Also, homes are fairly affordable but higher then average.

You didn't mention your price range, so...
Cherry Hills.

"Real estate prices for homes start in the $700,000s and range up to $20 million"
Greenwood Village is nearby and a bit cheaper.
Denver Country Club is closer to Downtown and more expensive.
