as saddened by the news as I am??

The world lost a great singer/songwriter today to prostate cancer and being a musician it saddens me. He was 56 years old. His music such as "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" brings back such good memories from my early childhood. "Leader of the Band" reminds me of my dad ... who I just lost to cancer as well ...

In the words of Dan himself I leave this tribute ...

"I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, papa, I don't think i
Said I love you near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy...
To the leader of the band;
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band."

Rest in Peace ...

I have no idea why anyone would thumbs down people who are giving an honest or heartfelt opinion on this ... but how sad for them that they have such pathetic lives.

I just want you all to know I appreciate your comments and condolences very much!

I just finished doing a search on YA and there are a whole lot of posts about Dan Fogelberg's passing, and I actually read through most of them and the majority, like me, have been very touched by him over the years. I actually posted a message on YA last night around 11:00 after I read about it while I was online. I can't even imagine a world without him and any new music that I'm sure he would have written. Fortunately we will always have the music he did create while he was with us. My younger years are filled with memories of his incredible music. I don't really remember exactly how or where I "discovered" him - I like to think he discovered me. He so touched me. Even though I didn't know him personally, I feel like he knew me because the way he wrote was just the way I thought and felt. His kind of talent is almost non-existent anymore. As far as I'm concerned, he is one of the most gifted and talented artists of my generation. Such a beautiful human being. The world is less now. My heart is hurting.

Yes, I am saddened by this as well. As I just posted elsewhere, I seldom cry when celebrities pass away, but I did (and am as I type this) when I heard this on the news. I, too, dedicated "Leader of the Band" to my dad when he died 2 years ago. I fell in love with Dan when I first heard "Run for the Roses" when I was 13. I still love that song, even though I hate horse racing, lol. The world has lost one very great talent.

And for the dufus who wanted to know what the question was--the poster wanted to know who else was sad to hear the news that Dan Fogelberg had passed away. Sounds like a question to me!!!!!

definite, it extremely is extremely, very unhappy. i can't pay attention to "chief of the Band" without choking up; it nevertheless jogs my memory of my very very own loved father, who died in simple terms over 2 years in the past. I grew up with the song of Dan Fogelberg. thank you for sharing your suggestions, Christee, and the candy words of a marvelous musical artist!

This is the first time I heard about it,.. very sad. Leader of the Band is one of my all time favorites. God rest his soul. May I comment on the one line of his song that you so kindly typed out, I believe the line is....The leader of the band is "dad"...I played it at my father's funeral.

I was a fan, loved so much of his music. Too sad he is gone and from my view, so young too!!!!

The man may be gone but the joy of his life is not lost, we can still enjoy what he left us. A mark for all times. Music lives through the ages.

I join you. Feels like Dan and I grew up together. My friend saw him at Red Rocks (awesome). Think I'll pull out Dan's records.
