Other people can wish you luck, but does it count if you wish it upon yourself?

Does it count? Hold on a second, I'll go ask "the god of luck"

Okay I asked him. No, it doesn't count.

Well, luck doesn't matter either way.

What people are truly doing when wishing you luck, is radiating positive esteem in the hopes of you embracing that positive outlook. It is proven that if you act more upbeat and optimistic, you will believe that things turn out better. The same is true for if you give yourself a pep talk. You are only boosting your own self-esteem in preparation for a big event.

Here's an example:
Scenario 1
Johnny is the star of the school play. He is a magnificent actor and no one doubts he will do quite well at the opening show tonight. Since he is such a good actor, no one feels the need to pep him up and wish him luck. All day, no one says a word, and he begins to feel really bummed out that no one has even mentioned tonight's play to him. The show comes around and Johnny does is best. Everyone compliments him, but he feels he did not do well. He attributes his believed "bad performance" to the lack of support he attained from friends.

Scenario 2
Julie is the star of tonight's school play. All day people have been wishing her luck. She has been telling herself that she will do well all day. She is so excited for the play. Show time comes around, and Julie messes up a few lines. Despite her mistakes, Julie feel that the play went good OVERALL. She is content with her performance and decides she will just try harder tomorrow night.

You see? If someone has a negative mindset, then even the best things are fogged in their minds.

That's why wishing yourself luck is actually effective.

It's not a very specific wish and it can attract luck to you in a similarily unspecific way unless in the back of your mind you really know what you want to be lucky in. So, yes it counts.
If you really want to be lucky in all things, then take a peak at "Ask And It Is Given" book or audio. This will give you all the answers you could ever hope for.

Go ahead wish yourself luck and put money underneath your own pillow for the tooth fairy. Seriously though statistically people that are successful don't believe in luck.

It counts the most. More than anyone else's :).
I would say what we tell ourselves...is way more important than what others tell us.

If you think you will do poorly, no amount of goodluck from outside can help.
