that's a good question... as someone that is on antidepressants, I wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for me because of my depression. I feel that since I am getting the help I need to treat it I have control of it instead of it controlling me. The commercials you see on TV show people that are depressed and not on meds, then once on medication they are smiling and getting back into their lives again. The problem is that not enough people have good insurance and can afford to pay to go to the Dr to take care of themselves. Mental health care is not always a part of all insurance plans and can be limited on others. Unfortunately people with mental health problems are still looked at as if they are "different" when it is much more common than you would think. I'm sure you didn't expect nearly this much info in an answer. Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing... It's just this topic hits so close to home.

I've been there, so I understand. Sometimes temporary depression can be caused by an event in your life: divorce, a death in the family or of a loved one, etc. The longer term depression can be a chemical imbalance which can be solved with meds. I have been through a lot. Don't reject counseling, & if the counselor recommends it, try the meds, but only as a last resort.

Oh yes. I suffered from suicidal depression and alcoholism. I know the pain when you can see what you have become.

Yes, I do. Anyone could fall into such a state. And it's really sad to hear that they don't want to live any more. It means they feel truly miserable...

I honestly don't understand how someone could be depressed all the time, but I do feel sorry for them.

That depends on how they handle it.
Do they advertise it and make it a fashion statement? Then, no.
Do they treat it as a genuine problem instead? Then, yes.
