Men like Francis Drake, Frobisher, or Hawkins were well known "pirates", "terrorizing" the Spanish colonies and stealing Spain's silver. These men were also important in defeating the armada.

Columbus was 1492; look up Cortez and Pissaro's conquest of Mexico and Peru; The Invincible Armada was 1588, so yes Spain had colonies in the Americas for almost a CENTURY before the Armada sailed for England
