May seem like a strange question but Abraham Lincoln was depressed and he was one of the greatest presidents we have ever had. Someone give me some hope. Please.

YOU made it "in" on this wonderful day. This is a "gift" that no one but GOD can give us. I don't think that there is a benefit to being depressed. What shall we then say to these things? If GOD be for us, WHO can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with BENEFITS, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. I wish you well. Peace, Love and God Bless.

It's like alcoholism--you make a great counselor when it's all over and done (You're an expert on psych meds). But therein lies the question--how to get it over and done. I don't know how Mr. Lincoln functioned, but I can't even keep my rug vacuumed and my family fed, let alone run a country.

I have had several 18mo-2 year periods where I was okay. I kept taking my meds, and I was able to do great things with my energy and positive thinking.

I often wonder if the whole game isn't to see if I can hold onto my faith regardless of what I go through. There is grace, sometimes peace, and the understanding of others grows by the day. I just keep holding on.

Sure there are benefits to having depression, I know I've been dealing with it for more than 40 years. I have an understanding of people that I don't think that I would have had other wise. I'm able to empathize with people who are different from me and who see the world differently. I'm able to teach my daughter's a understanding of the world that they might not have had, had I not had depression. Yes it's been hard and there were times when I never thought that I would feel good about my self or life but for all of that I wouldn't change it.

Churchill and Hemmingway had terrible depression as well. Look what they accomplished. (I know Hemmingway killed himself, I mean before that part.)
I've had severe clinical depression for years. In a way, I feel that i'm the one who sees the truth about how the world really is. I'm not under the illusions other people are. That's why i'm so miserable, because the world is a truly bad and scary place.
So I feel like I see more. I also am more creative than almost anyone I know. A lot of very depressed people have that gift.
