I was gone for the weekend and when I came back I found fruit flies in the trash. The doors and windows were shut.... How can this happen? Thanks

you can bring them home on your fruits and vegetables from the store - they might lay some eggs on the skins and then after a couple days, the eggs hatch. be sure to wash all your produce when you get it home.

I know this may sound gross, but the produce you get from the store can often have fruit fly eggs already on it. When you get it home, and they have the right conditions, such as food sitting out too long (even in the garbage), they hatch.

That doesn't mean that the food that has the eggs on it is spoiled or in any way unsafe; it's just the nature of the fruit fly to lay its eggs on fresh fruit or vegetables.

Fruit flies lay their eggs on produce. Usually they will hatch and infest the home. If you did not have any fresh produce you may be experiencing is another form if fly that lays its eggs in common house hold drains.
