They're both pretty much the same. Gold plated is basically sterling silver covered in a fake gold finish. It'll eventually wear off and turn back to it's natural silver color. I'd go with sterling silver above gold plating any day.

Plated is electro plated with real gold. Gold finish may just be gold colored, ie fake.
