Yes and no...
The model does not have to have a "Fabio" type look, but a body fat percentage of about 10%. You will also liekly need a decent 6 pack and be at least moderately good looking.
The diet and exercise part is similar, as is the willingness to be posed for extremly long durations...

I would say it is pretty close to the way a female becomes a model.
Find a agent. There are usually agencies around your local area. He/she will find "gigs" for you. You become well known, and people try to find you, intead of your agent finding them.

It's shallow, but very, VERY true. It's almost the same for girls as it is guys.
