I am currently at a crossroads in my career. I'm attempting to figure out whether or not to pursue teaching English at the Community College level or to obtain a credential and teach at the high school level. I'm aware of the working conditions for each, but my questions primarily cover two areas:

1) How much do adjunct professors typically make (in California) to maintain a living. Do they sometimes work at two different schools simultaneously?
2) Is there much opportunity to move up from an adjunct position to a full-time position? If so, what types of salaried positions to full-time community college faculty members make?
3) Financially speaking, in your opinion, would it be worth it to pursue a career at the community college level or at the high school level.

The nasty thing about adjuncting is that almost all colleges anduniversities limit how many hours you can teach, like 9 hours per semester, which is not enough to live on, so you do have to work in more than one place, and then there's health insurance, which is not included.
The full time jobs are competitive, and they often hire someone who has worked with them part-time for a while, but not always.
You may find, ironically, that private colleges pay less than state colleges, although the students pay more to attend.
I was an adjunct in NYC for ten years, working at 3 colleges I made a decent living, but I moved to Florida and college pay was dirt, so I went with the public schools. High school was not easy, but I did it for 12 years, and now I'm at an elementary school, which I like better. And, I still teach a couple of classes on the side at a community college, but down here I wouldn't be able to earn enough to live on being an adjunct in 3 schools without health insurance.
Good luck.
Sorry I don't know about Calif. They probably pay better than Fla. and not as well as NYC.
