A great way to describe it would be an opposite of Scott Niedermayer's situation this year.

He began the NHL season, took a leave of absence to talk things over with his family, and ultimately decided that he should retire from hockey.

He didn't feel like he could compete the same as he had the past couple of years (seeing as he was getting pretty old by sports playing standards) and, eventually, didn't think that he was making as big of a contrabution to the team as a whole.

To start a new life. He was old (37+). He wasn;t feeling his normal self, and decided that there was more to life than hockey. Hockey's provided him with a ton of money, and now he'd like to share that and his time with his family.

As a Wild fan I was disappointed to here one of the original wild players was retiring but he had family issues and was getting old.

all i know is he had 'indefinite leave of absence' for personal reasons

i don't know if anyone can shed more light on it
