Nobody will pay $100 for a seat, and $8 for a beer while watching someone pick up garbage.

If you base your asumption that sports figures do not give back to society on monetary value, then by % it is probably not a lot but more importantly I think there are unsaid amounts of intangibles that are given to society through sports.

The best example I can think of is easy, look at what the first Yankee game in New York did for the for country after 9/11. It provided an escape for millions of people and signified to a country that we would make it through

I realize the importance of cures for cancer and the helping of children and I agree that tjose people are severely underpaid but none of those professions bring people around the world together with such a passion like sports do.

Lets see a garbage man do that!

Ever tried to hit a 95 mile per hour fastball? How bout fielding a hot line drive down the third base line or a deep drive up against the center field wall? To an average Joe baseball fan, these things might appear to be simple, especially on television. In the best conditions, these plays are actually very physically and mentally demanding. Surely you've noted that any true professional in any field, has the ability to make whatever they do appear to be easy. For Major League Baseball players who have been hitting, catching and throwing a baseball since as long as they can remember, it's no different. The most important reason why Major League Umpires collectively decide to postpone a Major League game because of inclimate weather (such as rain) is for the protection and safety of the players. To eliminate the chance of personal injury. This rule was created in the best interest of the sport, athlete and fan. "Delicate" you ask? In this case, the delicacy occurs during the act of writing those guaranteed humongous checks to the players who ultimately bring the fans through the turnstiles and tune into the games through various mediums. George Carlin's words below might hint to you why comparing baseball to football is probably pointless. "In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line." "In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe!"

If you watch either baseball or football you should not be asking this question. If you don't, you should realize that the number of fans that follow these sports dump millions of dollars into the these sports. If the money doesn't go to the players who should it go to then? They make this money because fans pay for tickets and watch games. If you don't like it stop watching. If you think garbage collecting is worth more and is more exciting, set up some bleachers and start rooting for your garbage man. Who knows maybe it will catch on. Monday night garbage tossing. "Are you ready for some garbage?"

People pay to see athletes, just like they pay to see musicians and actors.

That's capitalism -- having a marketable skill is a ticket to financial success. While no one is arguing about the relative importance of athletes and cancer researchers, that's the way the system is set up.

Are you kinding many people would die if they didn't have sports think about all the sick kids that for there wish they want to meet there favorite sports star (MY WISH). Just think about how happy these kids get when they meet them and shake hands and maybe even hangout with them. Many people give back to the community with the money they have.

Might have been better if you used someone who helped trying to find the cure for cancer, or a social worker helping abused kids.

And a lot of ballplayers give back to society, what do you do to help your fellow man?
