If you want richer tones and prefer pencil, get an Ebony pencil, available at most craft stores. They are darker than conventional pencils and blend much nicer. Charcoal is even darker and warning... it is a little messier than an Ebony pencil, but produces amazing tones and blends easier.

For a while, I had a set of 'greys', a set of 19 pencils in varying shades of grey. They were great to use. They ranged from black to almost white.

Kneaded erasers work much nicer than conventional ones and can be used to help blend.

Go to Hobby Lobby or any store with drawing supplies, and experiment with different paper textures. Vellum paper has an interesting blendable texture to it due to its smoothness, and conventional sketchbook paper has a different texture to it.

when doing illustration, I have never used sharpie because first they bleed and than they dry quickly. I don't think sharpies are made for drawing on art paper or illustration. They made for dense surface not porous materials. You can use alcohol to dissolve it, because sharpies are not made from alcohol. There is a special solvent for that. you can ask art supply store if they sell them. When working with markers, I use art marker like Prismacolor Premier Double Ended Art Markers, Prismacolor, Chartpak or Tran art markers. I used Bienfang bleed proof illustration paper. other brands of paper like strathmor or crescent may work as well but i like the smooth texture of the Bienfang. hope that helps.

If you are an artist....anthing will work. We artists will work with anything we find that will get the job done. With Christmas coming up drop some hints that you want supplies.
Paper, pencils (ebony is the best) conte crayons, Prismacolor Pencils and sticks, erasers, art gum or kneaded, lots of paper any type.

I use HB, H, 4H for darker, and more outlining sorts of work, with softer pencils; 4b, 6b, 8b for shading. I use a putty eraser for most erasings. For the sharpener, i use a graphite sharpener and for blending I use Kleenex.
