First in a home reduce cold drafts by using film over the window openings, foam seals under light switch cover plates and plug cover plates. Heating used electricity to some extent.

Next use the newer low wattage light bulbs instead in the old types. If the light is not super then increase the light by use of reflection such as well placed mirrors rather than increasing the number of bulbs burning (mirror at bottom of light will add reflected light upwards off ceiling etc.

turn down the thermostat a little and wear cardigans etc.

turn off everything not being used and not needed, extra lights, lights in rooms not being used, radio playing in background, tv left on and turn off all semi on devices like monitor, printers etc. They draw little in sleep mode but still add to the bill.

Have a regular plug into the line phone not a wireless as the base uses power and to recharge the handset. regular phone uses the power from the tel line supplied by your telco.

So any device with a clock and other fancy lighted displays that are on all the time, see if you can reduce these. For example to kill devices you can use a power bar with a switch to turn off several devices at once. Yes clocks will die and flash 12:00 when turned back on, but do you use them???

check the weather stripping on all outside doors and make sure it is blocking the wind.

Check your windows and see if you feel wind blowing inside of the pane of glass.

If you have a Forced-Air Heater, change the filter now and again in two months. Don't leave a light on in a room if your leaving it for More then a few Min's. (20) max. Use the new light bulbs to cut cost of lighting your home in half.

Put your water heater if electric or gas on a timer so to cut down the hours you heat water. When you can afford to make a change or need to replace your present water heater, replace it with a on demand water heater and say big bucks.

I have my home set up to use both gas and electric heat, so the one that cost the least is used the most!

Cover your outside faucets also this time of year to keep them from freezing. This don't save energy for you but dollars if it breaks and the water company on pumping it.
