Why is there no lights on some parts of the M40 London - Birmingham?

There are hundreds of miles of motorways in the UK that do not have lights - it is normal.

Lighting is usually only provided in Urban areas or at difficult/dangerous junctions.

The M3 for instance has no lights at all after leaving London EXCEPT at it's junction with the M25 - then nothing until Southampton.

I think it could be to do with the cost of illuminating it!
