I made little pawns for a boardgame out of modeling clay, but it won't dry and harden. I tried to bake it, but in the first few minutes, it melted a little bit. I also tried to leave it out, but its been 2 days and its still soft. A lot of people will be handeling these so leaving it soft isn't an option.

You probably bought oil based clay, Oil based clay is made to never harden.

When you go shopping again look for an air hardening clay. There are also clays that will harden in an oven. Read the packages.

My favorite is a water-based high fire clay. The clay needs to be fired in a kiln

You are using a oil based clay - it will not harden - you can go and buy a type of modeling clay that will air dry or there are recipes for salt dough on the internet that will suit your purposes for making game pieces.

If you prefer modeling the forms in modeling clay, then you can make molds to cast them in plaster or clay slip to be fired in a kiln. I work in modeling clay all the time, then coat with latex mold compound and make wax positives in the mold for metal lost wax casting. To see the steps, here

Otherwise get the proper clay for what you want to do, Sculpy will harden at under 270F in an ordinary oven.

Put it in the oven on 175-200 F for about 1 hr, if that's not enough, leave it in a bit longer
