I was looking at the Mini-DVI to DVI cable that you can get with a MacBook or whatever and i saw it looks really short, something like 10 cm. So my question is, how would I use that to connect my MacBook to my monitor? Is there somethign else I have to do rather than directly connecting the two with the short cable?

I would guess that it is a mini-DVI to DVI socket connector. You can then connect the DVI cable from the monitor to the adapter.

Does the DVI end of the cable have pins or sockets?

If it is pins then you would need a DVI extension cable, or a mini-DVI extension cable.

If it is sockets then your monitor cable will plug into it.
