We know that the universe is expanding. This implies that a long time ago, around 13 billion years ago acording to available evidence, it was tiny compared with today.

The process of rapidly going from tiny to extremely large is what we generally refer to as an explosion or a bang. Therefore the earliest times of the universe are referred to as "The Big Bang".

It should be pointed out that our knowledge of the early universe is sketchy at present, but what evidence we have appears to support the concept of "The Big Bang".

The question of the origin of the universe is of great interest to scientists and indeed all those care to consider it. It is unfortunate that we do not understand something so fundamental to our existence, and is the reason why so much research is being done on the subject today.

There is an infinite and absolute void. Somehow over 14-billion years ago an event occurred that brought into existence space and energy. The space expanded, the energy cooled and simple atoms were formed. Over very long periods of time the first stars were born, and then galaxies.
