Well you could put some peanutbutter or cheese on a mouse trap, or you could use some flypaper. Not much else, that I can think of.

You need to cut off their food source and find out how they are getting in and out. If you have trash cans without lids you need to make sure you put lids on them so they can't get in them. Also check the soffit all around your house to see where they are getting in and out from, and fix any holes. I also had a problem and once I found where they were getting in and out and fixed it and starting securing my trash I haven't had a problem since. Cutting back trees and bushes away from you home will also make it harder for the rats to get in and out of your attic. You may not want to use poisons if you have other pets for the obvious that they could eat some but also if a rat ingests it and a cat gets it and eats it your cat could die as well. The sticky board suggestions is the best way to go as far as traps, they love peanut butter so place a teaspoon or so in the middle of the sticky board. Problem with traps is you have to check them daily and if getting in and out of your attic is a problem like it was for me it really wasn't an option and we also had pets. So we took the preventative measures way and it seems to have worked great.

D- CON--------They usually don't die in the walls but it's possible. (only smells for a couple of days, if they do). I wouldn't recommend that if you have a cat though.
Some places like Wal-Mart have cheaper poison than d-con and work just as well. (Just a different brand or different poison).........Microwave some creamy peanut butter and mix it with the D-Con. It's deadly. and almost guaranteed.
When they eat the first batch up, wait 3 days before doing somemore. No sense in feeding them the expensive stuff while waiting. Be patient and keep doing that until you see no more eaten. This will work.

Do you just not want an exterminator?
You can put down mouse traps - glue or snap or dcon rat poison
I suggest getting a cat or 2 [cats do best when adopted in pairs] :)

You could set rat traps or poison. If you do not want to kill them, You could use a Live catch all trap. Just put peanut butter in them.

You could let a cat roam up in there for a few days and they will find a better place to live.
