When I turn on the laptop, the lan switch turns green and works for a minute or two, but then it shuts down and won't work even though it is switched on. the laptop is a Sony Vaio nr180e. I have uninstalled andreinstalled the driver but it still won't work. if anyone has had this happen to them or knows of a solution, please help!

You need to disable your Windows Zero Wireless Configuration. What is happening is this. Your built-in wireless lan card (on your laptop) has it's own program to automatically connect you to the nearest router. However, Windows XP/Vista has it's own program called Wireless Zero that also automatically searches and connects to wireless lans. So they are both trying to do the same thing and they are basically 'bumping into each other' causing you to get knocked off-line every couple minutes. Go here: http://paininthetech.com/2005/10/25/disable-wireless-zero-configuration-in-windows-xp/ and follow the very simple instructions and you'll never get kicked offline again (well, hope is good to have anyways...lol)... good luck :)

the settings on your wireless card in the laptop need to match that put out by your router. If the router is sending out encrypted signals , your wireless card settings need to have the same encryption and match the SSID being put out by the router. check the wireless networking forums for more info. Also, make sure there are no em interference.

i'm not sure about your particular notebook but a lot of them have a hotkey to enable the wlan. the user manual will be able to tell you what the key is, but if you can't be bothered looking at that have a look at your keyboard. with mine (an asus) i press the Fn key along with F2 (which has a wireless symbol on it).
