I used to play goalie when I was a wee lad so I was forced with the cage and didn't get a chance to compare. So, skaters, which do you prefer and why? What're some of the pros and cons?

it's really a matter of personal preference. I have used both, but prefer a cage because the clear mask is hot and it fogs up on me.

clear masks are easier to see in, but i need to be comfortable out there.

I hadn't worn either in close to 20 years until last year. One of the leagues I officiate mandated them for both players and officials. I just happen to be the right age that I progressed from no facial protection when I started to today's modern cages by the time I was in high school.

I absolutely cannot wear a cage any longer and I wear only the smallest visor I can find right now. I have the Oakley on my referee bucket and the Itech on my player's helmet. With the technology both companies have put into the visors these days fogging is rarely, if ever, a problem.

The bigger problem I have is sweat. As a referee it's not a big deal. As a linesman I am repeatedly wiping because I keep bending over to pick up pucks and breaking up altercations. Playing with a visor is not as big of a deal because you go to the bench every minute and can wipe, but the drawbacks are the same.

I personally prefer a cage. My team mates with platic masks have a real hard time with fog and water on the inside and out. I don't have that problems with my cage. They say they can see better without bars. But after a while you are used to them so it's like they are not even there. I also think the metal gives me a little better protection. I would always be worried about taking a blocked shot off the plastic mask and having it crack or break. I have been hit in the cage and no ill effects to the cage or myself. So it's cages for me.

They didn't wear helmets in my day ;)

In the 80s I used both a Richard Brodeur style cage and an itech visor, I much preferred the visor. Less weight, better vision. Condensation was an issue a couple of times, but not enough to use the cage.

Cons of the cage
- the bars are annoying
- the metal has weight

Pros of the cage
- no fogging up
- better security

Cons of the visor
- they fog up
- there is less security

Pros of the visor
- lighter weight
- slightly cheaper
- better vision

I've had both and I have to recommend the plastic mask. It's made out of the same stuff they use for the glass in NHL arena's so you don't have to worry about it breaking. It doesn't fog up very easily and you can see much clearer without the bars in your way. I dunno about you but I always accidentally focus on one of the bars and get distracted. Just remember to keep it clean and your all good.

If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go with the
plastic mask. When you wear the cage, it's like playing with a hand in front of your face. I don't
like either one---- I'll take my chances without them.

Never tried a plastic mask. I suspect it would be a lot hotter with less ventilation....
