Cuz it's "WAR on Christmas" lol.
Everything has to be about war with them.
I usually wish them a happy solstice...

Ha ha. I also love when cons use racist epithets and then claim, "But ... b-but, but, I'm not racist!" Hilarious. "Two-bit towel-head," anyone?
Even if it isn't "discriminatory" to say "Merry Christmas," I wish people would at least admit that doing this, compounded with all the media and advertising crap, makes their religion "normal" and all other religions "weird," not normal. That's all we ask. Admit that there's a problem. Quit pretending like you don't know what anybody's talking about and like you're so incompetent you're incapable of putting yourself in the shoes of a person of a different faith and ethnicity.

P.S. Why do atheists - and, really, anyone - have to deal with being accosted on the street by crazy Evangelicals and Baptists and Mormons with little prayer books and questions about "whether you know you're going to heaven or not." I never get accosted in such an idiotic manner by Hindus and Muslims and Taoists. I think some of these Christians have a problem with the fact that not everyone is like them. That, or, if they genuinely think they're spreading the "good news," they're just stupid.

First, to the historically inaccurate ranter, many of the Founding Fathers were deists, and would actually be considered atheists or agnostics today.
Second, by virtue of the First Amendment, we are NOT a Christian nation. We're a nation that takes no stance on religion at the government level as long as no abuse of others occurs; the majority just happens to be Christian, though lately the loudest "Christian" voices are more akin to Torquemada than they are to Christ.
Third, voluntary, INDIVIDUAL, prayer in school is permitted and, in fact, protected free speech, and this type of ranting is often found among those who oppose the switch to "Seasons Greetings."
Finally, and in answer to your question, I think it's simply because some people are resistant to change, and others have more sinister reasons for their extremely vocal displeasure.

The thing is, it isn't the government who is pushing this. Its retail and public places who know that we now have diversity and who feel they have to adjust to it. Why do they blame "liberals" for it? I still say Merry Christmas unless I know someone is not Christian. Then I say something more generic. The difference is, I don't work with the general public.
The cons you mention think that everyone should be Christian because it is mostly our heritage, but that is changing with globalization in the interest of commerce. They think they can have it both ways but they forget that others feel as strongly about their religion as they do theirs.

I am Catholic and believe in Jesus. Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays is fine with me. What is the big fvckin deal? I sometimes watch Bill O'Reily and he's obsessed with it...It is childish. Let's grow up... it's the 21st century and Jesus would agree, and he was from the Middle East.

No there's is no good reason to do that. If someone is offended by Merry Christmas when over 80% of Americas population celebrates it Then leave. Get out I don't give a damn about them being upset over the words merry christmas. no one told them to come here in the first place. The minority should not overturn the majority anyway! Before I'm done I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas

Evangelical christians get their panties knotted quite easily, so this isn't news.
Also:
1.) All the hoopla around this time of year about giving and LOVE should be a 365 day occurrence and not only once a year.
2.) "Christmas" is a Pagan holiday that the christians stole for their own purposes, holding onto some of the same traditions and discarding others.
3.) Wouldn't it be great, given today's environmental crisis, if trees were PLANTED instead of "sacrificed" for a few days of mythical mayhem and greedy consumerism?

That's not the reason... but in any case I could not care less about "Middle Eastern Religions" .... two of which (Jews and Coptic Christians) don't mind our Christmas celebrations...

your question has no answer as many of them dont have "panties". using the same logic why do liberals get their "panties" in a knot when a conservative simply wants to...
keep more of what he/she legitimately earns.
expects a president who lies under oath to be JAILED, not to offer a heartfelt...:"apology".
defeats through collabrative effort a ridiculous social welfare health insurance program where lower middle class tax dollars could literally be used to pay health insurance for families who can easily afford their own,
i think you see my point. there are political correctness issues on both sides but the faults of the liberals are vastly more serious than a holiday greeting.

It's a red herring and as a liberal, we get upset over them too.
In regards to the "war on Christianity", I always like to consider the construct of time and appreciate that the Christian faith is omnipresent in this hugely important arena. Moreover, due to its inertia, it's unlikely to leave for quite some time.
Response to Messiani:
July 4th is not a religious holiday, I think the comparison with Christmas is a stretch.

Because I don't see the need in changing a traditional holiday's name to keep some one from being offended. No one said they can't celebrate Ramadan. Try going to a Muslim country and tell them that Ramadan offends you.
I don't understand what the big deal is. Christmas is a federal holiday.
