Off the books means, there is no record of the person earning anything.

You have to have an earnings history to get social security. This requires "40 quarters."

You have to have an earnings history to get SSDI (disability). If you are over 31, you need to show earnings in 5 of the previous 10 years.

SSI requires that you be totally and permanently disabled and the disability is expected to last at least one year or result in your death. Even then, they will want a worksheet filled out with the last 15 years of work history. If you are disabled and destitute, you may be eligible.

Well...I'm not sure why someone else working "off the books" would affect the jobs I would be eligible for.
