Kerosene heaters are not very efficient when first lit. They smoke and smell until they get hot. I light mine outdoors and let it burn for about 5 minutes, cut it off, and relight it as soon as I get it in place inside. That way it is still hot enough not to smoke the house up.

A kerosene space heater is made for indoor use. You would try to heat the outdoors. It was 15 deg. here this morning when I got up so high 30's sounds pretty good to me.
Edit: Aww I should have remembered the preheat part.

It probably wouldn't hurt the heater or you but I think I'd start out with a clean batch of kerosene! It may just cause an odor. Hope the storm misses you!

The burning of any fossil fuel releases carbon monoxide gas. Kerosene (or what us country folk call white gas) is no exception. Although it may be safe to use one indoors make sure you provide adequate ventilation. And never let it burn unattended. Warm your house but before you go to bed shut it off.

we use one in the winter inside but! make sure you use kerosene not fuel oil or you will get black soot on everything.
