Your body kind of eases you into labour. Its almost never very sudden.
First you have cramping, and then that turns into period pains.
Next you have the contractions. If you have ever been doubled over due to a period pain, thats pretty much what contractions feel like when they start, and they just get stronger.
When your contractions get stronger, your body goes into denial, which brings out swear words, and sentences like "I cant do this." and "somebody help me" even though there are 2 midwives and a doctor in your room already. (plus your support person.)
The best way to deal with that, is when you feel a contraction start, acknowledge it, and say i can do this, i can do this, and remember to breathe. Not he he ho ho, just normal breathe.

When my contractions got too strong, i had pethadine, which is the shot in your thigh. It's not quite the epidural, so i'm told, and it doesn't work for everyone, but it worked wonders for me. In the beginning, i couldn't stomach the gas. It made me sick. But after the shot of pethadine, and when i needed to push, the gas was a good thing, if only to take my mind off the discomfort of trying to poo out a 36cm head. (which is exactly what it feels like.

The second stage, When you're pushing, it just feels like you're constipated and really need to do an enormous poo. Go with it. (Unless of course the doctors tell you you're not dilated. Then they'll give you something for it.)

In the third stage, i felt my baby's head pop out... literally. It wasn't until they had to stitch me up that i was told i had second degree tears. i had no idea, because my body was kind of numb from the pethadine, and it naturally numbs it from the shock of labour. They didn't cut me... i'm happy about that, because my tears didn't actually hurt at all, except for when i was sitting up, and had heaps of pressure on them.

The contractions are like intense squeezing of your insides it will depend on if you feel them in your back more or your abdomen as to how you would describe it. Crowning I would say is like a Chinese burn (twisting 2 hands around your wrist in opposite directions) about a hundred times worse so burning stretching pain. But I swear you will forget the pain when you see that baby. I had gas an 2 pethidine shots works good.

I would describe it as the best pain EVER! When you get to see the most amazing little person that comes out of all that pain.. it is seriously totally forgotten about..
YES, it is VERY painful, at least for me it was.. BUT every woman is different and have different thresholds of pain..
Epidurals are great :)

Just think about the worst pain you have ever felt and multiply that by like 100. Or just imagine crapping a 7lb watermelon.
