DNA has the information or instructions for building all of the cell's proteins. The proteins handle everything else.

DNA is built of units called nucleotides, each having a nitrogen base (adenine, thymine, cytosine, or guanine), a deoxyribose sugar, and a phosphate. The DNA molecule is in the shape of a twisted ladder with sides made of alternating sugars and phosphates. The rungs or steps of the ladder are the pairs of nitrogen bases (AT, CG).
