Tasmanian Devils once occurred on mainland Australia, with fossils having been found widely. Today, however the devil is only found in Tasmania. It is believed the devil became extinct on the mainland some 600 years ago -- before European settlement of the continent. The dingo, which was brought into Australia by Aboriginal people, is believed to have ousted the devil from the mainland.
Today, devils are found in some north, east and central districts where some farming practices (e.g. rangeland sheep grazing) provide much carrion. Tasmanian devils may be seen in many rural and wilderness areas by slowly driving at night along secondary roads. Devils may be seen at the Narawntapu National Park, Mt. William National Park, Cradle Mt. National Park, the Arthur River and highland lakes area. Look for them a few hour hours after sunset

Suprisingly enough TASMANIA is the home of the Tasmanian Devil ,
Tasmania is an Island STATE of Australia, which is named after the Dutch Explorer Abel Tasman.
It was once called Van Diemans, land after another Dutch Explorer called Pieter Van Dieman , but Van Diemans land is now a part of the Antartic territory
IE Antartica / The South Pole
The Tasmanian Devil is so called because of the "devilish" sounding cries & calls & shrieks & banshee like wailings etc which a mating pair of them can "give voice" to.
"Roses" Answer was the best answer, so far, to this question.

I've only seen "Tassie Devils" at the zoo here in Sydney
P S The ones in the wild in Tassie are suffering from a mysterious form of "facial cancer" which wildlife experts are baffled about the cause of, at the moment , which is spreading quite quickly.
Some of the healthy ones have been removed from Tasmania & sent to some of the mainland zoos and animal sanctuaries in Australia in an effort to keep them free of the "facial cancer".

um...... Tasmania. (a part of Australia. it's the little island to the south). That's at least where he is supposed to be from. The cartoon character is supposed to be based on an actual animal (the 'tasmanian devil') native to Australia /tasmania. Hence, the name. Lol
