FYI...this point has been discussed, cussed, etc. numerous times in the Horse forum...lots of interesting points, so rather than go into it all, I will say this.
Nobody who loves horses "likes" slaughter. Few people can even say they are actually "pro" slaughter as in they think it is a good thing...it's just a shame.
The real issue is animal overpopulation. Too many people breeding too many horses. If people would stop breeding marginal horses just cuz they have animals with working reproductive systems, the kill buyer would be priced out of business.
You ask what the world is coming to? Exactly what we let it, if we continue to look for feel good solutions that only serve to move the unpleasantness out of the public eye rather than actually solving the problem.
Slaughter as it is now in the US is a byproduct, a symptom of a glutted market.

We also need to stop uuing and awwing over the cute little baby horses that are so cute.
Horses are now being starved to death. These horses are also being dumped now as dogs and cats are.
Is this right? it would be better off to let someone or something eat these critters instead of them dying like they are now from starvation or wild animals attacking and killing them.
I bet if you all would give up your front lawns, or your garage maybe even living rooms, you can fill these areas up with a horse or two.
Vegetarians scream and yell over this, but for you meat eaters out there, where do you think your food comes from?
Just hurting the farmers and ranchers, congratulations.

so I don't get it are you a vegan?
I'm not so I'm not against any sort of slaughter when done by the law animals don't suffer, of course unless you consider captivity suffering.
remember every horse slaughtered in this country is because people do not commit to the life time care of these animals and feral horses are bad for the environment and basically unwanted as well.
as far as people killing cats and dogs that's in China or similar part of Asia where human rights are less than our animal welfare laws best not to even mess with another country's values or beliefs.
Humans treat animals as if they can be thrown away look at the number of animals in shelters, the number of horses dumped at slaughter is no where near the number of discarded cats and dogs which are destroyed because they weren't babies anymore, so to help encourage people to adopt a horse before seeking one that is breed and spay and neuter cats and dogs, education is the key
Oh and when slaughter is banned in the US these animals are now just shipped to much much worse slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada where laws may not be as tough and TV cameras can not reach, they don't get saved by the bans that's an illusion.
and yes PETA sucks!

It's terrible. It's inhumane. It's not fair. I agree 100%. But there is only so much we can do. I'm 16 years old. The only thing that runs through my head when I got to horse auctions is... That killer buyer better not get that horse. And when I confront people who agree with horse slaughter...the only thing I can ever do is, plead my case. But, nobody listens to kids. Kind of like, we don't listen to animals (horses in this case.) We, humans have to be the voice of the animals. If you hate it, then do something about it. And if that doesn't work, make people listen.
We need a president that will stop this for good.
So far, some places have got shut down.

I have never sold a horse to slaughter, BUT!....
The current ban on horse slaughter has absolutely devastated the horse market. I have a bunch of horses that I cannot sell. Horse prices are falling like a rock!
While tree hugging, comi-libs have coerced congress into passing bills to prevent us from even giving a horse away.
I have read dozens of accounts of horses being turned loose in the wild. People with horses who can not sell them and can not afford to feed them are turning them loose.
Ranch owners are finding starving horses being turned loose in the open range.
Stupid Big-City Politicians with no horse sense have listened to these tree hugging socialist and destroyed the horse industry. By making it illegal to even give a horse away they have made it impossible to eliminate the sick, lame and old horses that are no longer usable.
Like any other livestock some people choose to eat horses, I don't care if some Frenchie wants to eat a horse, I do care that people who have horses and can't feed them are letting them suffer.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, the reaction to this knee jerk ban on horse slaughter has been the abuse, neglect and starvation of thousands of horses.
I tried to get a shelter to intervene last year in an abuse case. Every shelter I called was full and had no room for anymore horses. So forget your sob story, you have no knowledge of the truth, only feelings.
Liberals always operate on feelings and neglect the facts. Facts require thought, not feelings! Feelings are irrelevant, facts are facts!
The facts are that this horse slaughter ban has caused a lot of horses to be neglected and abused.

Like all other livestock SOME PLACE has to take the ones that are unwanted, injured or nearly dead. The overpopulation of them in the West also takes a toll to keep them from overbreeding.
Like it or not, horses are livestock, and like cows are processed for food in supposedly humane ways. Cows are plenty innocent, yet not many people are saying save the cows. Or sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, etc.

where do you live...not in the US that's for sure...all the slaughter plants for horses are closed here.
If you do live in the US, you really should educate yourself before asking a question. And you should really see when that was put on that site. It must be old...
don't you think cows, pigs, chickens, sheep are sweet innocent critters too?
Now just think, if you hadn't run into that stuff on that site, you would still be clueless....are you going to save all those innocent horses? Or are you the type who just moans and groans? Wait just the fact that you posted this on here answers that question....
EDIT....YAY BOXER LOVER!!!! Say it like it is =)
EDIT...did I mention that PETA sucks!

i think everyone should go here and watch it because it shows the truth and what happens every second of everyday to these animals and hardly anyone tries to stop it at all.

I am with you and have been doing petitions and signing petitions and writing to my congressmen to stop horse slaughter. There have been and still are many bills in legislation that need support. I also donate time and money to the effort. The PMU mares and foals is also another battle I fight that needs support, and that one is just sad and cruel. A drug company Wyeth makes a drug called Premarin that is made from pregnant mare urine. It is not necessary but they still do it. Any way they have 1,000 and 1,000 of mares bred over and over again to get their urine. They mares live in awful conditions. They do not want or need the several thousand beautiful healthy foals so many are just slaughtered. There are several groups that try to adopt them out. They are of every breed and size. It is just sad and cruel and just pure sinister exploitation of a beautiful, magnificant, and innocent animal.
