I graduated from college with a B.S. in Human Development and am currently finishing up my M.S. in school counseling from a very reputable school (GPA roughly 3.7 and 3.8 respectively). However, as I near the end of my studies I have come to the realization that this career is not for me. I am looking for a career that is equally as stable and rewarding(ex.helps others, but offers personal freedom as well) but possibly has a higher salary. Also, as I have become more exposed to diverse clients through this field I have gained an interest in the GLBTQ population and their needs. My question is can anyone provide me with suggestions or resources as to what or where I go with my career interests? I have no problems continuing my education and in fact am very much interested in pursuing Phd level work. Any help would be great, thanks!

before you jump into anything read Cash Flow Quadrant. it's a book by Robert T. Kiyosaki and it'll blow your doors off. starting off with defining the lifestyle you want, no job, nice car, big house, no debt. there are people out there like this, you just have to find them. Learn what they did to get where they are in life and then do what they did to get to where they are at. It's lonely when you're the only one job free and their more than happy to show you how. I'm job optional right now, I'm just working on increasing my income to where I can have some fun too.

You might try checking with some GLBTQ organizations for research, support or lobbying opportunities. Amnesty International is hiring, The Service Members Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has some openings, and the Williams Institute at UCLA has an ad for a research assistant.
Some other organizations you might look into:
The National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA)
The LGBT wing of the ACLU
National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF)
The Human Rights Campaign
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission
I should warn you however that not-for-profit groups (NFOs) usually don't pay as well as companies that exist to make money for themselves or their shareholders. If it's only salary you're after you'd be better off with a job in the private sector. These organizations still might help you identify companies they hire however. Good luck!

Congradulations! That is great. Well, if it makes you feel any better 80% of people are working in jobs that do not have much to do with their actual major. Sice you do want to persue a PhD you may want to go to a school that emphasize in the field you are interested in. Try to do some research and see what your options are. You can be a counselor or advisor that is felxible and the salary goes up, plus you are helping students and learning at the same time. Good Luck. Also, try researching online about careers, there are hundreds of websites.

I think you should look at the occupational outlook handbook. You can go to Yahoo and type it in b/c Im not sure of the actual web address but it has ALL careers from A-Z. I think you should get your PhD that way you can teach on the university level. That would be an interesting job and it pays. Or you could consider opening up a center that provides different services for those in need.

Go for a full Psychology degree, some of your credits might translate (human development and counseling).
After you make a reputation and a practice for yourself, you might want to consider volunteering your time at the nearest GLBTQ community center.
Many people can't afford psychologists, and would love the opportunity of a couple of free sessions.
