how do you beat the monsters in the caves i try but die quickly. also where do you get the material to forge an item

Ok, backwards first.

To get the hammer, you need to till and plant 3~6 three-by-three squares of crops in the first cave, I recommed radishes to start with. At that point, the blacksmith will give you the hammer. Use the hammer on the black and gold rocks in the cave to get minerals. You want iron and some copper for use in tool upgrades. If you find any minerals of really high level, consider selling them instead.

To beat monsters, use weapons, one-handed swords are best. Your tools are not good enough. Buy a sword and shield from the blacksmith, and consider buying a bracer from the seed merchant.

The most important advice for fighting monsters is to remember attacks cancel attacks. If you hit an attacking monster, its attack is canceled, so hitting and running is a good survival strategy.

Keep the colored grass and bamboo you get from the fields, and eat it to get your health up between battles.

I don't know where you are in the game, but I think your first priority is to grow veggies until you have the money to buy a sword, shield and bracer.

After a few levels in the mine, you can get a hammer. That might help you with finding materials.
