I think it'll happen when the earth natural resources are starting to get scarce all around the world, plus the effect of the future global warming thus forcing the dominant nation of that era to move and expand their territory to the what they labels as the less important minor nations. But of course even today a third world country wont just accept that kind of treachery and fight back. While the other nations seeing this as the opportunity to do the exact same thing as the dominant country one and so trigger a chain effect to a world wide free for all war era that probably going downright to the human genocidal or probably even extinction. As for the war itself i don't think nuke will be used here by the dominant ones since they do need the natural resources badly from the other, and personally i think it might happen sooner than we thought so i doubt we're going to see laser cannon, giant robots etc to be used on that war.
