San Diego State is a great school. Good beaches. Good surf. Good bars. And like Eddie Murphy says, "Six foot blondes grow on trees in California."

Do you mean that San Diego State is expensive, or that the area around there is expensive to live in? If the former, your only lower-cost alternative would be a community college. If the latter, you might look at some of the CSUs outside of the major cities, since San Diego, L.A., and the Bay Area are all very expensive to live in.

If you move to California and go to a junior college first you might be able to qualify for instate tuition (cheaper) before you transfer to the state school. Many of the junior colleges have special relationships with specific colleges that make transfer easier, so be sure to pick the right junior college.
If you do this though, you should aim for one of the UCs as a opposed to the state colleges, they are all better schools, some of the best in the country.

UC Santa Barbara is awesome. Southern California is very expensive! Chico State is not nearly as expensive and is way up north in California near the mountains for 4-wheeling and beautiful scenery.

UC Berkeley is one of the most respected colleges in the entire state, but it's not cheap either.
