All of the answers here are correct. You might be interested to learn, however, that the phrase has another *literal* meaning.
"Beau" in French means "beautiful". Thus, the French might talk of "un beau ciel bleu," a beautiful blue sky.
"Coup" means "hit," "blow," "strike," and is used in many French phrases. A "coup de pied" is a kick (a hit of the foot); a "coup de tonnerre" is a thunder clap. We actually use the word in English; you might hear somebody say, for example, that a certain event "was a real coup," (pronounced 'coo') which means that it was a really helpful thing.
Thus "beaucoup" means literally a "beautiful hit" or "beautiful stroke." When the French say that they have "a lot" of something, they are literally saying they have "beautiful hit" of it: "J'ai beaucoup d'argent"; I have a beautiful hit of money. It's fair enough to say that "beaucoup" translates as "a lot," but much of the French is lost in translation.

In addition to their primary meaning as a definite article ("the"), "le" and the related words "la", "les", and " l' " can also be pronouns that refer to nouns previously mentioned: Trouvez-moi mon crayon, s'il vous plaît. (Find my pencil for me, please.) – Le voici. (Here it is.) Est-ce que vous porterez cette robe ce soir? (Will you wear that dress this evening?) – Non, je ne la porterai pas. (No, I won't wear that one.) Regardez toutes ces fleurs! (Look at all these flowers!) – Oui, on les vend ici. (Yes, they're for sale here.) J'ai beaucoup aimé ce livre. (I liked that book very much.) – Nous l'avons aimé aussi. (We liked it too.)
