In many cities across the country, weekend editions of newspapers often have the highest circulation numbers (more copies sold than any other day of the week.) Why is this?

The primary reason is the big fat Sunday newspaper - full of all kinds of interesting stuff. It's had lots of sales adverts/coupons that can save a person a lot of money which more than recoups the cost of buying the paper. A lot of people have weekends off from work and can sit back, relax and read.

Saturdays actually are way down the list on sales, but Sunday is first. Since more people have time to read on Sunday, the newspapers have tended to add sections over the years. Plus, advertisers know it's a good place to sell products.

Just speaking from my own preference, I have more time to read them on the weekend, and there is a lot more to them - entertainment, etc. plus lots of ads and coupons! I recycle whatever I don't use.
