"Wired" by Jeff Beck..with "Birds of Fire" by The Mahavishnu Orchestra,a strong second..cos both completely rattled my cage at the right time.
Jeff Beck has always been one of my all-time favourites and will remain so...But I have a suggestion you may appreciate..there is a Santana record called "Welcome" (72-73?) with one particular song on it called 'Flame/Sky' which features Carlos and John McLaughlin both soaring almost as one..but not..I cannot emphasise the experience of listening to this track..these guys were off the ground. Please Listen!

Not sure I would have limited my picks to your nominees, preferring Area's Arbeit Macht Frei. But, what the heck, it's your question.
That said, I'm going with Mahavishnu Orchestra, because they were pretty much the pioneers of the sound. Return already pushed out a kind of Latin beat sound before Chic put the new band together for the fusion thing.
Gotta go with DiMeola, though. If for no other reason than he was 19 freaking years old when he joined RTF.
Great question. Makes me wanna go pull out tons of old vinyl and roll a number.

- I see the nominees, but the cut "DREAM" from Mahavishnu's "Between Nothingness and Eternity" has always been my favorite, so I choose that album.
- Guitarist? John McLaughlin. Al DiMeola is extraordinary, but I find too much redundancy in his compositions... IMHO

Since Jeff Beck is my all time favorite Guitarist I'll pick the Wired album and him for best fusion guitarist also.
When Blow by Blow and Wired first came out I would play those albums over and over and never tire of them.
As a matter of fact those two albums are on a cassette I made that I still play frequently.

Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow. His skill at guitar is awesome and is only complimented by the heavy bass riffs on tracks like "You Know What I Mean". I'd also consider him the best fusion guitarist.
On a side note, not someone you've mentioned but have you ever heard of Mother's Finest?

I like Return To Forever. More for Stanley Clarke though. But I will go with Al DiMeola.

ok, now it is distinctly a techniques off of what i could wager you're searching for, yet there is various funk/jazz impact on the Stooges 2nd album Funhouse, extremely on the track Funhouse which has have been given to be the superb rock track with horns ever made.
