Read Cell by Stephen King. You'll love it! Its not too long, has its graphic moments, and is really interesting. I don't know how you couldn't like it.

I would recommend Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses to anyone of any age, but especially young adults. It's a great story which will appeal to boys or girls, and makes you think in very different way about such as racism and social class. Also, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is terrific, very readable, and a classic; Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy (superb and unputdownable); a book called Babyshoes (can't remember the author) about a 17 year old boy who has to become the responsible member of the family and look after his infant brother. Funny and touching.

You could try the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. It's Young Adult. And he writes in short chapters. 2-3 pages at the most. And it has a lot of action. It begins with "Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment."
Or if you think you'd like something outside of Young Adult, Patterson is known for his detective books. Also short, fast paced chapters. It will make reading easier.

What sorts of interests do you have? What sorts of movies do you like?
Since you're 17 you probably enjoyed the terrible film '300.' If so, read Steven Pressfield's 'Gates of Fire.' It is a more truthful and stellar retelling of the battle of the 300.

How about a sports book by Mike Lupica? He's very popular right now. One title is "Heat." Or a comic or graphic novel? My son has always liked Calvin and Hobbes.

Go with the Catcher in the Rye. He'll identify with Holden Caulfield and start using "goddamn" every sentence.
