ok, i currently work at the airport and i have quite an interesting job. to cut it short i basically supervise an aircraft turn around.
i travel an hour to get to work and obviously an hour to get home. this is costing me a lot in fuel and im only part-time. during the summer i had regular 30 odd hour weeks but stil never achieved 800 pounds a month in my wage, even though i am on about 7 pound an hour.
i pay for my phone bill and car insurance, as wel as my fuel a month. by the time my bills and fuel money has come from my account i am left with hardly any money. i have an overdraft on my bank account which i go over every month... giving me a charge EVERY month.
because i am part-time, if i have a day off sick or holiday i am only paid for 3 hours and 20 minutes for the day (i am contracted to 20 hours per week over 6 days).
a job in my home city has come up, it is a really crap job, infact its stickin labels on CD's, but it would give me more money than i am ending up...

... with now. its literally just temporary until i find a good job close to home. would you take it if you was me? my brother ad boyfriend seem to think its wrong of me to do it.
my shifts at my current job are the worst... sometimes im gettin up at 3am to work at 5am and finish at 9am! its winter and theres not as many flights so overtime is a no no.
some nights im gettin home at 1am!

It's probably worth it. I used to drive an hour each way too and it got old quickly. Do you have any benefits (health insurance, dental, vision, ect)? If you do not where you are now then definitely do it. In the long run it makes more financial and social sense since you will have more money and more time to spend with friends, family and the boyfriend. Sometimes you have to work a shitty job for a bit, but it gets better eventually. Good luck!

Absolutely!

Everyone should do this exercise, which you have, or calculating the actual costs related to a job and what the net "profit" is from working that job.

I'm always shocked when I hear people insist they need dual incomes, then find out they are spending most of the second income for day care, add'l car and travel costs, clothing, food, etc. So the net is, they give away 40 hours of their life each week for a pittance of net income... and that's worth it?

You have done your homework! A job does not need to be glorious, it needs to be profitable! It is, after all, JUST A JOB.

I would say do more homework, consider the long term benefits of each job too (what will look better on a resume for future jobs, what potential is there to move up, which is more in line with your long-term goals).

If you plan on getting married anyway and really don't have a long-term "career" in mind, by all means, take the job with more pay and less travel/expense that leaves more personal time for you!

Hi there...
Those our always hard questions!
Maybe you should ask yourself if you like your current job?
If you love working at the airport, you may consider working fulltime or taking another position.
I have to agree with you that working at the airport is much more interesting that labeling disks but its hard to make a choice.
As you work half time at the airport, you may take another part time job for the afternoon...

But if you're not so "in love" with your job at the airport and its all about the money, well yes no doubt but take the labeling job! And keep on looking for something better and make sure thats close to home or when its far from home make definitly sure that they pay your fuel.

Good luck with it girl!

I agree with Ruthie, take the job as a stop gap, but look for something more suitable for you in the meantime, it has to be better than getting in the red, having an overdraft, the travelling, and the un social hours, just keep on the right side of the new boss for references,at least you would have a chance to straighten yourself out.

i agree lifes not all about money but you do need it you don't want a huge debt in Ur Bank eating away at you in the back of your head, if ur sayin ur not accualy gainin any money from this job i think you should go with the lable sticking job as its closes but if it has the right money untill you find a good job, did u say u ad a boyfriend? if so do u live together? if u do im sure he could do some extra hours untill you get a job thaty you get money from, i think you should change job for money purposes maybe they will let you back on if you cant find anything but i dont no........... good luck

You have to determine the benefits of each job and the negatives. Label Sticker- more money, less driving, certain of your work schedule, work normal hours. Airport -Advancement? Benefits? odd hours less pay, more wear on car. Since i don't know the answers to the airport job you have to figure them and decide. If it was me I usually take more money, helps with the bills.

I also did this when i worked at an airport, driving in 1 hr 1/2 traffic to and back. I finally got so drained and quit. If you can find a better job I would!!

You have to do what ever it takes to get you through and if your current job is not doing it, it's time to move onto a better paying job. Everytime I changed jobs things just kept getting better for me until I have a dream job now. We work for money so go where the money is!

I would guess that until you feel "better" (without the long commute etc.) you won't be at your best to be able to find a job closer to home.

I would say take the "labels on CDs" job and adjust your schedule and reduce your commute, and then you will feel better, and you will be able to look for and find a better job closer to home.

You are obviously under a lot of stress and that's not the best condition to be in to find another, better job.

YOU have to decide what's best for you. It sounds like you think taking the new job on a temoporary basis makes sense financially and in terms of quality of life. Are there additional factors that go into your decision?
