i think this is an interesting question. i used to wonder whether it was better to offer food or something useful. i went as far as giving some jumpers and stuff like that to one i used to see on a daily basis (i'd also give him money, when i was able to). i haven't for a long time because i hardly ever see homeless people these days (as my circumstances have changed).

i now don't believe that it is up to me to judge what another person needs. i feel that it is wrong for me to assume to understand what someone in that position is going through. however, i think it's important to treat all people (regardless of their financial circumstances) with respect and kindness, sometimes to give a little time to someone is priceless.

depending on HOW they ask me, i might just keep walking or give them some change. if i'm with someone, they always say sorry i dont have any money. yeah right, why lie?

I was on a trip to Arizona last year and there was a homeless guy outside of the convenience store. he was sitting by his bike of cans and sweating profusely. if you have ever been to AZ you know its HOT there. well i was going in for coffee and had walked there so didnt have much money on me but gave him a quarter which apparently put him right over the top for what he needed to buy. he just wanted to buy a nice cold beer but the woman would not sell it to him because he had no ID and he was obviously old enough with his gray beard. I was angry.

If you consider the person really is homeless then either give them the price of a meal or take them to McDonald's and order them one there. Homelessness is becoming a real problem in almost every country and we would be foolish to think that it couldn't happen to you and me. There are many people who became homeless through circumstances beyond their control and we should at least be compassionate towards them.

Give them some, without being judgemental or wondering whether they are buying drugs or alcohol. If there is even a tiny chance that it will help that person survive another night it is worth it. A little compassion can't hurt.
EDIT: FRACTAL FRACAS.....beautiful answer, it is nice to hear real compassion!
