I am writing an essay on how Gothic architecture relates to medieval values, and I have no idea what a medieval value is. Thank you!

The most important thing to know about medieval values is that during the Middle Ages everything revolved around religion. Art, music and literature were created to serve the Church. The Church was the only great patron of the arts. Later on secular kings and emperors and wealthy merchants commissioned art. Most people were serfs. Their whole lives were lived to cultivate the land which belonged to the nobles. Land was the main commodity. People lived their entire lives near where they were born. This was the manorial system. Only people who lived in towns were outside the manorial system. To townsmen money was the main commodity. People married for reasons of economy not love, to better their families' standing. The nobles had to swear allegiance to higher nobles, who had to answer to the King or Duke. Loyalty was the most important thing. This was the feudal system. Gothic art was started in France and then spread to other countries. Large Gothic churches were built for religious reasons. They soared upward to serve God. They were community projects and took generations to build. Because of pride each community wanted to have the tallest cathedrals. Each Gothic cathedral had great works of art. Often they had great sculpture on the exterior or beautiful stained glass inside. They depict scenes from the Bible to populations that were illiterate. But the most important thing is that life during the Middle Ages centered around the Church.

It sounds pretty subjective to me. I recommend that you Google Gothic architecture. Read as much about it as you can. In particular ask why there was evolution from Romanesque architecture. Read about what the medievals thought they were doing and why. Maybe it will come to you that there are certain organizing principles that are their "values."

a theme of the 14th century was death, gloom, and pessimism. The 14th century was dominated by repeated outbursts of the plague. It is estimated that at least 40% of the population of europe was wiped out. People became faciniated with death and the arts of the day reflected this.
