One thing that you can do is go to a hardware store or in the cleaning section of your grocery store. There should be a rubber kind of matting that people use to line their cabinets. Cut out small bits of it and slide it under your treadmill.

You know the cheap rug/mats/garden mats/puzzle mats that are like foam rubber. A piece of this cut to small size or size needed works wonderful. And you can even find this type of foam rubber in all types of craft sections now too. Can "COOZIES" are made of this stuff too, and some pads for computer mouses. I personally wouldn't put putty or wax on my varnished floors.

Buy some of those rubber drawer runners and put them under the front and back of the treadmill (or wherever the most weight is). they should prevent slipping and protect your floor (inexpensive too)

Cut some squares from rubber shelf liner and place under each wheel. This should stop it from shifting and moving. You can find rubber shelf liner fairly inexpensively at Walmart and such.
