I need to upgrade the RAM on my sluggish computer but don't know the first thing about what to buy or how to install it.

How would you?

Cheers.

I`ve already enquired at PC World about RAM upgrades they charge £14.99 labour plus parts. If you go to http://www.crucial.com enter your Comp details you will find out exactly what you require and cost

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

they will take £30 for installing + the cost of parts..you will 1st need to check what your motherboards capacity is etc..goto the crucial website and run a scan..write down the results i.e speeds(266mhz) (pc2700) (ddr/ddr2 sdram/dimm) (eec) (non/buffered)..just an example!! whats already in your computers slots and what slots are available and whats the MAXIMUM per slot
then goto another site i.e corsair or kingston and run a scan and compare results
the more groundwork you do the better!!
goto a local shop or buy over the net on ebay or pcworld or ebuyers a good site (also an earthing strap)
open up your case and you will see the memory slots with the memory already installed.the earthing strap eradicates static as this damages components..a clip either side holds it in..be gentle and try and not touch the bottom of the stick..insert your new RAM and slightly press in.the clips should close or almost close..just make sure they are closed again and you away..restart your computer and goto task manager or type dxdiag in START>RUN dxdiag and your system will be displayed

do the dxdiag and note your memory already installed before you goto the crucial sites etc..it all helps!!

where are you from out of curiosity..im edinburgh

Why do you need to go through all of that. right now while setting at your computer, check whats the ram on your computer>buy it from the store or find a good deal online>install it your self. if you're too young to do this ask your father to install it it only takes a screw driver. it'll be a lot cheaper, click on my photo and email me if you need help figuring out your ram

I'd first start by find out what type of ram the buy. I'd do this by installing a program that would tell me, there's one called CPU-Z made by CPUid. It'll tell you what type it, it's speed, capacity etc. I'd then just shop around the Internet, places such as http://www.overclockers.co.uk, or eBay for a correspondingly correct type of ram. Take off the case push the new ram in then i'd be done. Simple as 1, 2, 3.

They probably will but it is really easy to do it yourself. Go to www.crucial.com/uk. You can download a tool which tells you what type of memory you have and suggests what you need to upgrade. On the assumption you have a desktop machine it's really easy to fit it. It just plugs into a slot on your motherboard. It even has a peg in the slot to make sure you put it in the right way round. Crucial also give you instructions. If you have a laptop, might be best to leave it to the pros.
