The basic principle was that some one who had land granted out a part of it as a fief to another man. The first man became the second man's lord; the second man became a vassal. The lord owed his vassal loyalty and protection. The vassal owed his lord loyalty, military service, service at the lord's court, ransom if the lord were captured, money payment when the lord's son was knighted, and some other money payments.
At the top of the system was the king. The so-called great barons held their lands with the king as overlord and granted out fiefs to lesser vassals. The bottom man was a knight with a manor, which was enough to support him, worked by serfs. The manor functioned by the manorial system, which was an entirely different thing.
Feudalism evolved naturally in France and Germany. There were imperfections. Holders of some small plots of land had no lord, because they fell through the cracks when every thing was coming together. These plots were called alods. If a vassal owed his lord loyalty, it was unclear whether he owed loyalty to his lord's lord.
When William the Conquerer invaded England in 1066, he brought a perfected feudalism with him. He ordered the compilation of Domesday Book, so that the whole kingdom would be registered with no alods. He also started the Salisbury Oath, in which all subjects swore loyalty to the king. When the crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1100, they adopted the Assizes of Jerusalem to have a written version of feudalism in the new kingdom. When the fourth crusade captured Constantinople in 1204 and established the Latin Empire of Ropmania, they adopted the Assizes of Jerusalem.

Feudalism is social in that it creates and keeps very particular, rigid social instructions. it is financial in that those social instructions exist on the foundation of agriculture (and anybody's roles therein) and that's the backbone of medieval monetary device and taxation. finally, it is political because of the fact the main element of feudalism is the militia and political help for one's superiors on up the ladder, each and every of ways as much as the king.
