Have you checked to make sure that the origination of your problem is not caused by a nut controlling the steering wheel?
Is it possible that you've had too much caffeine? Or perhaps you've gone too long with out getting you coffee fix?
When you were told that your wheels might be unbalanced, are you sure they were talking about your tires?
If you can eliminate the possibilities explored above, you might want to ask a mechanic.

If anything shakes after warming up then it is most likely related to the car warming up. But getting the tires balance is not a bad first start. I just did it few weeks back (at $10 x 2 front tire = $20).
Lift the corners and jiggle or shake the tires / wheels in and out. The wheels should be very tight and there should not be any free play jiggle. If you are not sure what it should feel like, do the same on a newer car with no steering wheel shake - for comparison.

But I have a feeling that you might need to flush out the power steering oil (I'm assuming you have power steering). And ultimately you might need new power steering pump and / or steering rack (my current problem too).
Good Luck.

Alot of shops do free inspections for these sorts of things. I suggest you call around and find one and get it in. Sounds to me, if it shakes more when turning then clears up somewhat after the turn, you could have a hub bearing issue. Again, nobody can see your car over the internet, so you'd be better off taking it somewhere for the inspection where they can shake the front end down.

car type would help.frt or rear drive? i'm thinking tire out of round(belt twisted)other parts would do it most of the time.does steering wheel wiggle at slow speeds then get worse as speed increases.tire balance only comes into play after 45mph. wheel alignment does not give vibration unless it has ruined tires. could use more info. good luck. Yes that sounds about right.
Do you get to a certain speed that makes it worse??
Anyhoo, its not a major costly problem, just take your car to a local tyre fitter and they will balance them for you at little cost.
